March 21,Southeast Asia and Greater China of the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) announced in Beijing that according to the latest statistics from the Office of the US Trade Representative, the exports of US hardwood products to mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan surged to RMB3.6 billion (approximately US$500 million) in 2004, a 29.2% increase compared to the same period of 2003. After several years of double-digit growth, China has already become the world's largest export market for US hardwood products.
The lastest statistics also indicate that lumber was the most exported US hardwood product to Greater China in 2004, with an export value of RMB2 billion (approximately US$ 244 million), representing an increase of 19.4% over 2003. On the other hand, US hardwood veneer enjoyed the highest growth during the period, with the export value increased by 54.6% to nearly RMB700 million (approximately US$ 83 million). These are primarily contributed by the robust interior decoration market, the development of the solid wood and solid wood laminate flooring industry, the significant demand from the furniture industry, and the domestic consumption growth of China. Compared with Greater China, the exports of US hardwood products to Southeast Asia was only RMB1.1 billion (approximately US$ 140 million), but the export growth of hardwood products, lumber and veneer to the region reached 35.3%, 31.7% and 26.8% respectively.
The export statistics in 2004 showed that red oak was the most popular hardwood species in China, followed by black walnut, tulipwood, red alder, cherry and maple.
